About The Walk - Day 1

14kms (5 - 7 hours with breaks) - Moderate/Energetic walk with 2 hill climbs!
Or 12kms or 7kms (with 1 hill climb) - the choice of how far you walk is yours!
PictureParsons Landing (The Whareama Boat Launch)
After enjoying the continental breakfast provisions and receiving your picnic lunch, you head out from Ica Station and walk over private farmland making your way from Whareama towards the Otahome settlement.

Our Walk takes you from the Ica Station Homestead onto Awanui Station following fence-lines and a bull-dozed track, giving you fantastic views of the surrounding Whareama countryside.  You then continue across Waiteko following fence-lines, over stream crossings and onto a track giving you great views of the meandering Whareama River below, all the way to the Whareama Boat Launch, called 'The Parsons Landing' - a great place to stop for something to eat.
(Single Day Walkers start here to complete 12kms or 7kms.)

Then you head up through the poplar trees to the ridge (an energetic hill climb!), which takes you to breathtaking photo opportunities of 360 degree stunning and diverse landscapes, as well as spectacular views of the isolated Otahome Coastline, with ocean views towards the iconic Castlepoint Station and Castle Rock.

From here enjoy the wonderful coastline views as you make your way to the comfortable Wai Ngaio Retreat (your 2nd night's accommodation).  Or for a longer walk, continue on the Single Day walkers route down the gravel track to the beach (5kms more) where your transport awaits to take you back to your car or accommodation, as necessary.  We pride ourselves on being the most versatile walk in the Wairarapa!

At Wai Ngaio you will find afternoon tea and your evening meal, along with the next morning’s breakfast and lunch for day two.

We will transport your bags and go ahead to light the wood fire (if necessary), as well as ensure your wine and beer is chilled for your arrival.  Leaving you to relax, take a shower and enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean from the large veranda.

Terrain

The walk takes you over a large variety of terrain and conditions under foot.  Expect some uneven ground, as you will be walking on or through bulldozed farm tracks, flat open grass farmland, creek crossing and narrow stock tracks.
There are hill climbs on both days.  A reasonable level of fitness is required as well as good sturdy, comfortable footwear. Over the 2 days, this would be classed as a moderate/ energetic walk, please make sure you wear in your boots before the walk and have some hill walking practice!
